Reading for the FRCS (Urol)

Choosing a single book which covers the entire syllabus is impossible - No one book has it all! The selection below are "mainstream options". There is a short synopsis after each title, and a brief comment covering our thoughts on the book. The best advice is take a close look at each title and decide which is most suited to your personal preferences. We have also included some titles which are useful for day to day urology.

Oxford Handbook of Urology

Approximately 20% of all surgical operations and a similar percentage of surgical emergencies are urological in nature. However, often doctors have very limited experience of the many common and varied conditions encountered in this important surgical specialty. For the doctor or nurse expected to provide the initial assessment and management of a condition with which he or she has had very limited experience, this book provides an invaluable source of information and advice. This
applies not only to SHOs and specialist registrars on urology and surgical rotations, but also to General Practitioners, Accident and Emergency staff and the growing number of urological specialist nurses.

This handbook provides a comprehensive summary of urological disease and its management, in a form that is concise, relevant to the target audience and readily available. While the description of urological conditions is comprehensive, the emphasis is on the practical approach to the conditions which are likely to be encountered. The significance and appropriate management of common symptoms is described, providing (on a single page) a summary of the essential approach to a specific presenting
complaint, be that haematuria, scrotal pain or bedwetting.

Common urological operations are described, to allow the General Practitioner, Accident and Emergency doctor, nurse or surgical trainee, rapid access to information concerning indications, pre-operative assessment, consent, and complications and their management.

 Urodynamics

"Urodynamics" 3rd edition takes into account the technological innovations and new techniques that have been introduced since the publication of the 2nd edition in 1997. A simple yet practical guide to the functional investigation of patients with incontinence and voiding disturbances, the text makes clear the fundamental and vital contribution of urodynamic investigation to the management of patients with lower urinary tract dysfunction. The new terminology from the International Continence Society has been introduced, references fully updated and standardization reports in the Appendix completely revised. "Urodynamics" is now widely accepted and most hospitals now recognize it as an essential part of the diagnostic process in urology and gynecology. Specialists in geriatrics, pediatrics and neurology also appreciate the importance of urodynamics in the investigation of a large number of their patients.

Male Genital Skin Disease

There is a widespread belief that skin diseases of the male genitalia are poorly understood, difficult to diagnose and unsatisfactory to treat. The aim of this book is to disabuse non-dermatology specialists of these misapprehensions, in addition to venereologists, urologists, general practitioners, primary care physicians and trainee dermatologists. The book greatly aids understanding of this challenging area of disease.

The contents are arranged according to the nature of the clinical problem at hand. Appealing to both the non-specialist and specialist, Male Genital Skin Disease places an emphasis on working up the diagnosis and effective management thereafter. Both common diseases and rarities are comprehensively covered, and the book is illustrated with over 700 full colour photographs, representing one of the largest and most diverse collections currently in print.
